Employers and Coronavirus Sick Pay

Please feel free to share, tweet etc this information on to anyone else who you may know. We all need as much help and guidance as possible at the minute;

Existing SSP Rules

• The existing rules for SSP have not changed for all other illnesses.
• SSP (Statutory Sick Pay) is payable by Employers at the weekly rate of £94.25.
• This is pro-rated for employees who work less than a full working week.
• The SSP is only payable after ‘3 waiting days’.
• The SSP paid cannot be reclaimed by Employers.

New Coronavirus Sick Pay Rules

• The Government have announced special rules to apply for the Coronavirus sickness only.
• This applies to Businesses with less than 250 employees.
• Where these Employers have to pay any COVID-19 related SSP (Statutory Sick Pay), then this will be refunded by the Government.
• SSP will become payable from day one, i.e. no waiting days.
• The refund will cover up to 2 weeks per eligible employee who has been off work because of COVID-19, whether this is through a pre-cautionary self-isolation, or through actually contracting the Coronavirus.

• BUT – HMRC have not announced any information yet on how to reclaim this??

• Employers should maintain records of staff absences, but should not require employees to provide a GP fit note. An alternative fit note will be available shortly through NHS111.

Again, please feel free to pass this on to anyone else who you may know. Stay safe.
